Live Online Workshop with Dr. Nyree Penn, DHSc, CAA, NeuroRestorative Sleep Scientist

Taking Sleep Medication.

Still Waking Up Exhausted?

You might be falling asleep. You might be staying asleep. You might even be getting a full seven or eight hours. But is your brain actually resting and restoring, or just sedated? In this live workshop, I'll show you why those are two different questions, and why so many people on sleep medication still wake up tired, foggy, and wired.

Thursday, September 17 at 7:00 PM EST. Live on Zoom. Replay included if you can't make it live. Cohort capped at 50 seats.

You're Sleeping. So Why Don't You Feel Rested?

Here's the question I hear almost every week, usually from someone already taking something to sleep. "If my medication is working, why am I still exhausted?"

Maybe your medication helps you fall asleep. Maybe it helps you stay asleep. Maybe you're even getting your seven or eight hours most nights. And morning still shows up the same way: brain fog, a heavy head, low energy, the kind of tired that coffee doesn't touch. You get through the day, but something in you never fully came back online.

You've probably already tried the obvious fixes. You've cleaned up your bedtime routine, cut the late caffeine, bought the tracker, tried a supplement or two, maybe even switched sleep aids more than once. Some of it may have helped you sleep longer. It didn't make you feel restored.

That doesn't mean you're doing something wrong. It usually means you've been measuring the wrong thing: counting the hours you were unconscious, instead of asking whether your brain actually recovered during them.

Sleeping and Restoring Are Not the Same Thing

For fifteen years, I worked as a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant. My job was to sit with people at the most vulnerable moment of their lives and watch what their brain was doing while they were completely under.

That gave me more hours than almost anyone watching the difference between a body that's unconscious and a brain that's actually recovering. And I can tell you: those are not the same event. You can put a body down and get nothing back from it.

That's the part that changed everything for me. When I started looking at how we treat people who can't sleep, especially people relying on medication to get there, I saw the same pattern. We were getting very good at putting people down. We were not asking whether anything was being restored while they were there.

Most sleep medications are built to reduce wakefulness: to help you fall asleep, stay asleep, or both. That's a real and useful job. It is not automatically the same job as restoring your brain.

Sedation Is NOT Restorationℱ

The question is not only, "Did you sleep?" The question is, "Did your brain restore?"

What You'll Learn

What I'll Walk You Through, Live

This is a focused, one-hour workshop, and I'm teaching it myself. Here's exactly what you'll leave with.

✅ Why sleeping longer doesn't mean restoring better. Duration alone doesn't explain why you still feel foggy or flat the next day.

✅ The real difference between sedation and restoration. Helping you fall asleep or stay asleep isn't automatically the same as helping your brain recover.

✅ What the five major sleep medication categories are built to do. A plain-English look at:

- Z-drugs

- Orexin receptor antagonists

- Sedating antidepressants

- Benzodiazepines

- Supplements and herbal products

What each is designed to do, what's commonly reported alongside it, and why you can be "asleep" on any of them and still wake up unrested.

✅ Why you might still wake up foggy and exhausted. How sleep architecture, fragmented sleep, and medication effects can add up to a night that looks fine on paper and feels terrible in your body.

✅ What NeuroRestorative Sleepℱ actually means. The framework I use to ask whether your sleep is supporting brain recovery, mental clarity, emotional steadiness, and a functional day, not just knocking you out.

✅ Why a "normal" sleep study doesn't always explain your symptoms. Traditional sleep medicine asks if you're breathing. I'll show you the second question it usually skips.

✅ What Sleep Independenceℱ really means. It isn't a promise of perfect sleep every night. It's a plan for the hard nights, so one bad night stops wrecking your whole week.

This stays educational throughout. Nothing here asks you to stop, reduce, increase, combine, or replace any medication. Those decisions stay between you and your prescribing physician, always.

This Is Built for People Who've Already Tried the Obvious Things

This is for you if:

✅ You're currently using a prescription sleep medication, a supplement, or another sleep aid

✅ You can fall asleep, or stay asleep, and you still wake up exhausted

✅ You sleep several hours and still deal with brain fog or a heavy head

✅ Your sleep study came back "normal" and you still don't feel rested

✅ You feel wired and tired: worn out, but wired enough that your body won't fully settle

Stop Being Wired and Tired.ℱ

✅ You've tried several sleep strategies already, and none of them stuck

✅ You want to understand what your medication is actually doing, without being told to stop taking it

✅ You want a real, science-based explanation instead of another generic sleep-hygiene list

This isn't for you if:

❌ You had two rough nights this week and you're otherwise fine

❌ You want a personalized medication-tapering plan handed to you in a group workshop

❌ You're looking for a specific supplement recommendation

❌ You need urgent medical or psychiatric care right now (please contact your doctor or local emergency services)

❌ You're not willing to involve your prescribing physician in any medication decision

Why This Approach Is Different

Traditional Sleep Questions Don't Explain Why You're Still Exhausted

Traditional sleep medicine asks one set of questions: are you breathing correctly overnight, are you waking from apnea, how many hours were you actually asleep. Those questions matter. I've spent years as a Principal Investigator on a Phase 1 clinical trial studying sleep restoration, so I take rigorous testing seriously.

But I've watched plenty of people pass that testing, get told everything looks normal, and walk out with the same exhaustion they walked in with. Normal sleep testing was never built to answer the question I care about most: did your brain restore?

In the workshop, I'll show you why both questions matter, and why persistent exhaustion, even after a "normal" result, usually means it's time to look at restoration, not just duration.

Dr. Nyree Penn, DHSc, CAA, is a NeuroRestorative Sleep Scientist and the founder and CEO of NSOMNIA Sleepℱ, The NeuroRestorative Sleep Companyℱ, based in Aventura, Florida.

She spent over fifteen years as a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant, monitoring patients' brains in the operating room. That's where she first saw the gap between a body that's sedated and a brain that's actually recovering, and started building a framework to close it.

She's the author of "Why We Don't Sleep: The Biological Secrets Behind Insomnia," Principal Investigator on a Phase 1 clinical trial studying sleep restoration, and a U.S. delegate for World Sleep Day 2024. She hosts the Sleep Reimagined podcast and speaks on sleep, restoration, and performance.

Her message is simple: sleep isn't sedation. It's restoration.

You Don't Need Another Sleep Hack

You probably don't need another bedtime routine. You probably don't need another gadget. And you should never make a medication change based on something you read online or heard from a friend.

What you might need is a better explanation for why you're sleeping and still not resting.

Join me for the Sleep Independence Blueprintℱ Workshop, and let's ask a better question about your sleep. Not just how many hours did I get. Did my brain actually restore?

Live online workshop. Replay included. About one hour, plus Q&A.

FAQ

Questions, Answered

What if I can't attend live?

Register anyway. I'll send you the replay either way.

Is this only for people on prescription sleep medication?

No. It's just as relevant if you use melatonin, magnesium, CBD, an over-the-counter sleep aid, or a combination, and you still don't wake up feeling rested.

I'm on sleep medication. Is this workshop for me?

Yes, and this part matters: nothing in this workshop asks you to change your medication. Do not stop, reduce, increase, combine, or replace any prescription, supplement, or sleep aid without your prescribing physician. That decision stays between you and your clinician, always.

Will you tell me if my medication is safe for me?

I'll walk you through general education on the major medication categories and their commonly reported effects. That's not the same as an individualized medication review, and it doesn't replace advice from your doctor or pharmacist.

Will I get a medication tapering plan?

No. I don't hand out individualized tapering plans in a group workshop. Never stop or adjust a prescription sleep medication without guidance from the clinician managing your care.

Is this going to be a pitch?

I teach for the hour. At the end, I'll tell you about the Sleep Independence Blueprintℱ, the program I run for people who want to keep going with me. You're welcome to ignore it completely. The teaching stands on its own either way.

What's the $47 Clinical Companion Experience?

It's an optional add-on built around the same guide I teach from. You get the complete PDF and six videos of me walking through it section by section, so you can go deeper on your own time.

Do I need a tracker or an app?

No. Bring your questions and something to take notes with.

How long is it?

About an hour, plus live Q&A.
